When most people think about protecting their brain as they age, they think about mental exercises: puzzles, crosswords, sudoku, brain training apps. And while those activities do help build cognitive reserve, the research is clear that when it comes to actually slowing brain aging, the most powerful tool available is not mental. It's physical.
A study from King's College London followed 324 identical twins for 10 years and reached a surprising conclusion: the twin with stronger legs at the start of the study consistently had better memory, greater brain volume, and fewer changes associated with cognitive aging a decade later. Genetics and early childhood environment were not factors, since both twins shared the same background. The difference was leg strength.
The biological explanation makes sense. Leg training, especially load-bearing exercises like squats, stimulates the production of BDNF, the protein responsible for neuron growth and survival, improves cerebral blood flow, and reduces systemic inflammation. The legs contain the largest muscle groups in the body, and working them generates a hormonal and neurological response significantly greater than any other muscle group.
The most recommended exercise is the squat, both in its standard version and as a chair squat, where a chair is used as a guide and is ideal for older adults or those with limited mobility. Both versions activate the quadriceps, glutes, and hamstrings simultaneously, generating the greatest possible stimulus for BDNF production. Complementing this with brisk walking and moderate cardiovascular exercise amplifies the benefits further: a study published in PMC found that at least 52 accumulated hours of exercise are associated with measurable improvements in cognitive performance in older adults.
The conclusion is simple: if you want to protect your brain, start by strengthening your legs.
